The battery powered ride-on John Deere Gator Toy for Kids

This fantastic Peg Perego Usa John Deere Gator Hpx is a battery powered replica of John Deere’s famous Gator vehicle.

Made by the supreme Italian toy stylists Peg Perego, this will keep your kids happy for hours whilst making them look decidedly cool too.

Features at a glance

These are the important need-to-know features of the John Deere Gator for kids:

  • Powered by a rechargeable 12V battery (charger supplied)
  • Recommended for ages 3 to 8
  • Carrying capacity weight 130lbs
  • Unit weight 77 lbs
  • Travels 2.25 to 4.5 mph forward and 2mph in reverse
  • 47 inches long, 24 inches wide and 36 inches high
  • Adjustable seats
  • Knobbly tires for traction on all surfaces
  • Built in cup-holders

How well does it work?

The Gator is a battery powered ride on car. The 12 Volt rechargeable battery gives it an extended running time, but you may well need to keep a spare in reserve if your kids are going to be riding the Gator morning, noon and night.

It is important to make sure that the battery is 100% charged when you first start off and to ensure that you don’t let the charge drain completely. Even so, some customers have been known to replace the original battery with a different brand and reported better performance.

It has a ‘Smartpedal’ control system so that it drives pretty much just like mom and dad’s car. There is a 3 position variable accelerator to adjust speed and provide a comfortable ride. The higher forward speed can be locked off by adults if need be, so as to stop new drivers getting too carried away.

What can it do?

It will carry 2 children (up to a total of 130 lbs) and generally do so pretty efficiently on flat surfaces, over grass and even over most rougher terrain.

It has a flat cargo bed on the back which can be raised and a working tailgate. So if you are out there hauling logs or grass clippings with your tractor dump cart, you should get some willing volunteers to help you in their Gator.

Is it safe?

It has an adult operated cut off to prevent the higher gear being used, so beginners can be kept under control while they learn the ropes.

It also has automatic brakes which lock the wheels when the accelerator is fully released.

If you think about the highest speed that this thing can go, it is not much above a fast walking pace. There is a pretty good chance that your kids hurtle around the yard a lot more quickly on their scooters or bikes. So, I doubt speed is much of an issue, so long as children have been trained how to use – and stop – the Gator properly.

That said, one or two parents complain that it’s hard to get their kids to stop at all sometimes and it would be better if there was some kind of shut off switch that parents could use to control operations.

Does it need assembly?

Yes it does need some assembly and, whilst the steps you need to take are not difficult in themselves, the instructions that you are given are not especially good and also not all in one place. It is therefore recommended that you make sure you gather all of the assembly information, pictures and parts together before you get started and that you make sure you plan the order of assembly carefully.

There are around 19 customer reviews on and it gets an average of 4 stars (please note there seem to be various versions listed on and not all have reviews, so follow the links here to read the full reviews). That seems to me like a pretty good endorsement.

Most people comment that their kids love it and that it is a pretty solid and robust unit and therefore seems to justify its price.

Put it this way, if I was between 3 and 8, I would definitely want one NOW!
